Step One: Log in to your Bitstamp account at
Step Two: After signing in, select your profile icon in the top right corner, then select Settings from the dropdown.
Step Three: Select the “API Access” on the left selection bar, then select "Create new API Key" from the screen.
Step Four: Set the permissions for your API Key
You want to ensure that all of the Reading functions are enabled, and all functions relating to trading, transfers, and withdrawals are disabled. For Bitstamp, this is NOT the case by default and you need to select "Read main account balances and transactions" from this list. It is important to double-check at this stage as the Hash Data tool will deny the API key if any trading functions are enabled.
Once your permissions are set, hit the "Create new API Key" button again and enter your 2FA code as prompted.
Step Five: Record your generated keys.
Under the "Permissions" heading, verify that the permissions associated with the API key allow viewing access to the account, and no Write functionality had been added during the previous step.
Be sure to record your Secret Key in a secure location, as this key will be permanently hidden once the page is refreshed (Bitstamp warns it is only available for "a few minutes", however testing suggested this would remain on-screen as long as the screen was kept open).
Once recorded, press "Activate API Key"
Step Six: Check your email for an activation approval
Bitstamp will email you asking for approval to create the API key. Check for this verification email (typically takes around five minutes), then click the "Activate API Key" button - you will be re-directed back to the Bitstamp webpage to sign in again, where you can verify this key is now activated on your account.
Step Six: Enter your API keys into the Hash Data tool
Log into the Client Portal of the Hash Data tool, then navigate down to Exchange Accounts (1), selected Add Exchange (2), then enter your keys where prompted (3). As reference, the "Key" from Bitstamp is the "" in the Hash Data tool.
Note: In the "Passphrase" box, please enter "HashData", and select "Can perform write test?" to verify that no writing capabilities are enabled.
Step Seven: Click "Test Keys" and let that complete.
If the test sends an error in response, please re-review the information entered and the permissions associated with the API key. The software has a number of checks in place to prevent users from uploading keys with "Edit" capabilities, so this is the most common source of errors.
Once the keys are tested and no errors are noted, click "Submit".
Congratulation - the Hash Data tool is now able to read your exchange account!
